Murugesan had been farming 4 acres of paddy and vegetables in Tiruvannamalai for 18 years — always using chemical fertilisers and pesticides, always in debt. He visited Arivuthottam in 2021 after hearing about K. Senthamizh Selvan's story on Polimer TV. In a single day on the farm, he understood why chemicals were destroying his soil and his income. He returned home, stopped all chemical inputs and began making vermicompost and Panchagavya on his own farm. Within two seasons, his soil had improved dramatically — yield increased by 40%, input cost dropped by 87% and for the first time in 18 years, he ended the season in profit.
Voices from the Field
வயல்வெளியிலிருந்து குரல்கள்After her husband's illness left the family in debt, Lakshmi took over their 2-acre land near Vellore. She visited Arivuthottam and learned to grow medicinal herbs and vegetables using natural methods. Today she supplies 12 organic stores across Vellore and Chennai — earning a stable monthly income while farming completely chemical-free.
Karthikeyan, 28, left a software job in Bengaluru to farm his family's 5-acre land in Krishnagiri. He visited Arivuthottam for training in intercropping and natural pest management. Combining coconut with mango and banana, he now earns more than his IT salary — while living debt-free on his own land.
After 20 years of chemical farming, Selvam's 7-acre land in Dharmapuri had turned to hard, lifeless clay. He attended an Arivuthottam training session and began vermicomposting and cover cropping. Three years later, his soil is alive again — earthworm count restored, water retention improved and yield doubled across all crops.
Meenakshi, a self-help group leader from Ranipet, visited Arivuthottam with her group of women farmers. Inspired by what she saw, she became a local trainer for natural farming — conducting sessions in her own village. Her SHG group now collectively farms 15 acres organically and sells directly at local markets.
Annamalai was on the verge of selling his 3-acre ancestral land in Villupuram after repeated crop failures. He attended the Arivuthottam seed saving workshop and began growing traditional rice varieties — Mappillai Samba, Kichili Samba and Kavuni Arisi. These heritage varieties now sell at premium prices to organic consumers — saving both his farm and a piece of Tamil Nadu's agricultural heritage.
