From Banker to Nature's Farmer

K. Senthamizh Selvan is a People's Movement Activist who has been working alongside communities for over 45 years. The experiences he gained by founding and leading various movements and organisations are what continue to drive him to this day.

கு. செந்தமிழ் செல்வன் — மக்கள் இயக்கச் செயல்பாட்டாளர். கடந்த 45 ஆண்டு காலமாக மக்களோடு இணைந்து செயல்படுபவர். அவர் முதல் வித்தாகத் துவக்கிய இயக்கங்கள் மற்றும் அமைப்புகளில் பெறுமிடத்த அனுபவங்களே இன்றளவும் செயல்படக் காரணமாக உள்ளது.

During his 36 years at Union Bank of India, he was responsible for issuing farm loans across two states. He witnessed first-hand how farmers suffered — land poisoned by chemicals, mounting debts with no way out. The growing unawareness of urban consumers about the source of their food troubled him deeply too.

யூனியன் பாங்க் ஆஃப் இந்தியாவில் 36 ஆண்டுகள் பணிபுரிந்தார். இரண்டு மாநிலங்களில் விவசாயக் கடன் வழங்கும் பொறுப்பை ஏற்று, ரசாயனங்களால் சேதமடைந்த நிலங்களையும் கடன் சுமையில் தவிக்கும் விவசாயிகளையும் நேரில் கண்டார். நகர மக்கள் உணவின் மூலத்தை அறியாமல் ரசாயன உணவை உட்கொள்வதும் அவரை கவலைப்படுத்தியது.

"As a banker, I realised how dejected most farmers felt. Their land was doused with chemicals. Even if a farmer received a loan, it would be impossible for them to revive the land or repay the amount. This ground reality rattled me to no end."

In 2012, at the age of 60, he sold his home in Katpadi and bought 3 acres of barren, uncultivable land near Kalampattu, Latteri — land others had written off entirely. He fenced it, dug borewells, and began restoring the soil using bio-fertilisers. Whatever grew in the first two years was ploughed back into the earth to remove chemical residues. In 2014, he took voluntary retirement and devoted himself fully to the farm.

2012-ல், 60 வயதில், தாம் வசித்த கட்பாடி வீட்டை விற்று கலம்பட்டு அருகே 3 ஏக்கர் தரிசு நிலம் வாங்கினார். வேலி அமைத்தார், குழாய் கிணறு தோண்டினார், உயிர் உரங்களால் மண்ணை புதுப்பித்தார். முதல் இரண்டு ஆண்டுகள் விளைவித்தவற்றை மண்ணில் திரும்ப உழுதார். 2014-ல் தன்னார்வ ஓய்வு பெற்று பண்ணைப் பணியில் முழுமையாக ஈடுபட்டார்.

Today, that same barren land yields 4 tonnes of mangoes and 10,000–15,000 coconuts annually, generating around ₹6 lakh per year. Over 150 farmer groups and more than 2,000 students have visited the farm for free. His wife Gunasundari has been by his side through every step — helping on the farm, advising, guiding.

From Banker to Natural Farmer

During his banking career, Selvan was responsible for farm loans across two states — where he witnessed farmers drowning in chemical-related debt and land becoming unusable. The urban consumer's complete disconnect from the source of their food added to his concern.

வங்கிப் பணியில் இரண்டு மாநிலங்களில் விவசாயக் கடன் வழங்கும் பொறுப்பை ஏற்று, ரசாயனங்களால் சேதமடைந்த நிலங்களையும் கடன் சுமையில் தவிக்கும் விவசாயிகளையும் நேரில் கண்டார். நகர மக்கள் உணவின் மூலத்தை அறியாமல் இருப்பதும் அவரை கவலைப்படுத்தியது.

In 2012, while still in service, he bought 3 acres near Kalampattu and began preparing the soil — fencing, borewells, bio-fertilisers. The first two years yielded nothing — everything grown was ploughed back to detox the land. In 2014 he took voluntary retirement and committed fully to the farm.

He assembled a resource team of retired agriculturists — all volunteering without charge. Drip irrigation kept the process water-efficient. Today, selling mangoes at the farm fetches ₹8,000 — but selling directly in Chennai earns ₹45,000. This insight drove him to create direct-to-consumer markets.

"We have a democratic system at home — every decision is taken with everyone's agreement," he says. His wife Gunasundari helps on the farm throughout. His two children, both IT engineers, have been fully supportive from the very beginning.

A Journey That Never Stopped

ஓய்வுக்குப் பிறகும் நிறுத்தாத பயணம் — வங்கியிலிருந்து விவசாயம் வரை, இயக்கம் வரை

Located in Kalampattu village, 150 km from Chennai, Arivuthottam stands lush and thriving today — 110 coconut trees, 90 mango trees, 25 chiku, 33 lemon, banana plantation, herbal garden. Once barren land nobody wanted. Now a free learning centre for farmers and students, a model for natural farming across Tamil Nadu. The Makkal Nala Santhai and Nam Santhai connect farmers directly to consumers — no middlemen, fair prices. And still today, he leads the movement for ecological farming in Vellore.
